For seven-year-old Billy, (Sebastian Rice Edwards) war is fun. He lives in London during the German blitz. Although he would rather not be surrounded by a house full of women, he is totally enthralled by the nightly bombings and war efforts that are part of everyday life. He is much too young to realize that his father and uncles are fighting to protect him. For him, the war fits right in to his overripe imagination. His mother (Sarah Miles) works hard to try to keep the family together. But things are not easy. Her older daughter becomes pregnant by a Canadian soldier. And while there home does not suffer from the nightly bombings, a stove mishap catches the house on fire and everything is destroyed. This forces the family to move to the country with her father. Billy loves his grandpa and even though the world around him is on the brink of destruction, Billy’s life is one of adventure and play.
