The dashing and vile Baron von Geigern (John Barrymore) has checked into the Grand Hotel where he plots desperately to steal the priceless pearls possessed by the beautiful dancer Grusinskaya (Greta Garbo). The Baron also seeks to steal something else of value at the hotel, the heart of the gorgeous and influential Flaemmchen (Joan Crawford), the mistress of the powerful and violent businessman Preysing (Wallace Beery). All of this occurs as it is witnessed by the drunkard Dr. Otternschlang (Lionel Barrymore) who chastises the hotel’s lack of excitement, unbeknownst to him the scandal that occurs currently which will change the hotel and the lives of all those involved forever.
