Zack Mayo (Richard Gere), the loner son of a hard-boiled, sailor father (Robert Loggia), enrolls in Pensacola’s famed Naval Aviation Officer Candidate School to, as the cadets say it, “get jets.” Along the way, he is befriended by a naïve, young pilot from Oklahoma, Sid Worley (David Keith), who is too busy fulfilling the lost dreams of his late brother to examine his feelings about the life he’s chosen for himself, challenged by Gunnery Sergeant Emil Foley (Louis Gossett, Jr.), a disciplinarian who is determined to crack the exterior of the cocky Navy brat, and, despite himself, falls in love with one Paula Pokrifki (Debra Winger), a local factory girl who proves no pushover for the overconfident officer-in-training. Can Zack learn to trust – and care about – anyone besides himself before it is too late?
