When a lonely butcher from the Bronx tries to find love, he meets many obstacles. “Marty” concerns a man (Ernest Borgnine) who describes himself as “ugly,” but is a hard-working and honest fellow who supports his widowed mother (Esther Minciotti). He is desperately lonely and feels he will end up all alone, except for his equally dejected friends like Angie (Joe Martell). Though his mother pressures him to find someone, she really does not want him to desert her. The storyline concerns Marty finding a plain girl named Clara (Betsy Blair) at a ballroom dance club. They have an understated pleasant time, but everyone suddenly disapproves of Marty’s dating the woman, a teacher, called a “dog” by his friends. Two hurt and shy people seem to find some happiness, but Marty may give her up in response to peer pressure and family criticism. His final decision will be a Moment of Truth.
