This is a coming of age story about teenagers in a small West Texas town that is in decline. The movie theater, run by "Sam the Lion" (Ben Johnson) closes after Sam's death, hence the movie's title. His assistant, Sonny Crawford (Timothy Bottoms), ends up having a love affair with Ruth Popper (Cloris Leachman), wife of the high school football coach, Coach Popper (Bill Thurman). Sonny's best friend, the school's football star, Duane Jackson (Jeff Bridges) has a romance with Jacy Farrow (Cybill Shepard) the prettiest girl in school. Filmed in black and white, the movie has a strong sense of time and place.
