The movie takes place at Christmastime. Meredith Morton is a conservative, tongue-tied businesswoman, going home with her fiancee Everett Stone to meet his family for the first time. From the moment she steps trhough the door, however, she is given a hard time. Everett's sister is icy cold to Meredith, his mother is negative and judgemental about her, his older brother is cooly aloof and may or may not be hitting on her, and poor Meredith starts a gigantic fight over dinner with a comment about Everett's gay brother. When Everett asks his mother for grandma's engagement ring to give to Meredith, the first answer is no. Things are so bad that Meredith calls in her sister Julie for moral support. By the end of the holiday stay, harmony is restored to the Stone household as everyone finds their place and makes peace with each other. Then they are able to come together in the wake of mom's big secret.
