Haganah leader and resistance fighter Ari Ben Canaan (Paul Newman) is among those aboard a ship trying to come from Cyprus with about 600 Jewish emigrants traveling to the sector of Palestine that will become the state of Israel. Kitty Fremont (Eva Marie Saint) is his love interest but their relationship is greatly complicated by the struggle to form a state. Canaan’s Haganah is less militant than the Irgun, and the uneasy relationship between the moderates and the extremists complicates the stand off with British troops. Gen. Sutherland (Ralph Richardson) and Maj. Caldwell (Peter Lawford) are leaders of the British forces who blockade the ship in the Cyprus harbor and Ben Canaan also must have delicate negotiations with them. The United Nations approves the creation of Israel and the plot continues with the life of the principle characters in their new homeland. It does not spare the less admirable parts of the struggle and includes the terrorist bombing in the King David Hotel as well as the noble sacrifices and acts.
