Bernie Lootz (William H. Macy) is the definition of "bad luck." Everywhere he goes, the hottest of streaks is ended. Shelly Kaplov (Alec Baldwin) makes dubious use of this skill at his business, the Shangri-La casino, employing Bernie as a professional "Cooler", a man who ensures the house always wins. Unfortunately for him, one day Bernie meets the love of his life, cocktail waitress Natalie Belisario (Maria Bello), and soon his fortunes are reversed. The story becomes a race against time, as Shelly tries to break up the happy couple before his own job is endangered by the "new breed" Ivy League hotshot Larry Sokolov (Ron Livingston) and his own less-than-honest superiors.
