Based on the true story of British track stars Harold Abrahams (Ben Cross) and Eric Liddell (Ian Chaleson) and the events that precede the 1924 Olympic Games. Scotsman Liddell is a devout Christian who views running as an extension of his faith. Abrahams is a wealthy Jewish Cambridge student who sees running as a way to cross rigid English class boundaries. Both men face hardships as they prepare for the Olympics. Liddell defeats Abrahams at their first track meet, spurring Abrahams to hire a professional trainer in order to improve. This action is met with disapproval from Cambridge University officials. Meanwhile, Liddell’s sister (Cheryl Campbell) fears that he is too focused on running and is drifting away from God, jeopardizing their goal of becoming missionaries in China. Liddell ultimately refuses to compete in a heat for the 100m sprint when the race is on a Sunday. Abrahams competes and wins the gold medal in this event. Liddell then competes in the 400m, where he is wins gold.
