Macon Leary (William Hurt) is a troubled writer, who in many ways has lost all touch with his life, and moreover reality. This gets even worse as his child dies suddenly in a tragic accident. No longer is he able to gleefully write his popular and acclaimed travel portfolios, he cannot even focus on his work and to make matters even worse his wife divorces him. He gets some relief though, when he meets the lovely Muriel (Geena Davis). While Muriel’s personality is in stark contrast to the contained and reserved nature of Leary, the two mesh together well and fall in love. Their love though, may not in the end, be able to overcome these drastic divergences.
