Parker Wilson (Richard Gere) is a genial college professor with a heart touched by a stray dog. Discovering the animal at the train station where he commutes, he takes the animal home to his wife Cate Wilson (Joan Allen). Soon the animal becomes part of the family and the rites and rituals of their lives. In fact, Parker takes the animal with him to the train depot each day as he travels to work, and Hachi greets his new master later in the day when he returns. Unfortunately, Parker suffers a stroke, later dying. The dog maintains his routine thereafter for years, always waiting at the train station for Parker’s unlikely return. Parker’s friend Carl (Jason Alexander) is astounded by the animal’s loyalty.
