Lucas Steiner (Heinz Bennent) is a Jewish theater director during the occupation of Paris by the Nazis in World War II. His wife Marion Steiner (Catherine Deneuve) is also an actress in the theater troupe, but during the occupation she must act as both actress and director in his place. Lucas, while compelled to leave Paris, actually remains, hiding out in the basement of the theater. Complicating Marion's job of both acting and directing is the fact that she must keep her husband safely hidden from the Nazi invaders. While staging their latest production, which ends just before the last metro train marking the Nazi imposed curfew, she hires Bernard Granger (Gerard Depardieu) as the lead. This further entangles her as she begins falling for the new leading man.
