An oil well catches fire in Central America. The oil company needs nitroglycerine there to cap and extinguish it, but transporting it to the well by truck is the only option, and much too dangerous for the regular employees. The company promises a significant paycheck to anybody who successfully navigate the treacherous terrain and rough roads, and ultimately four men, desperate for a money and an escape from their isolated South American town of Las Piedras, are selected for the task. In the first truck Corsican expatriate Mario (Yves Montand) is joined by a newcomer to the town, French gangster Jo (Charles Vanel) whom he does not trust. The second truck is driven by Bimba (Peter van Eyck) and Luigi (Folco Lulli). The trucks set off, and over the white-knuckled journey they face narrow precipices, flooded roadways, fallen boulders, and more obstacles, all of which could jar the cans of nitro and cause a fatal explosion. Against all odds, the drivers need to survive the harrowing drive, as well as mounting tension between the men themselves.
