This is a story of adolescent mischief gone array. As Antoine Doinel (Jean-Pierre Leaud) a boy who lives with the knowledge: that his mother, Gilberte (Claire Maurier) had wanted an abortion when she became pregnant with him, that Antoine’s stepfather, Julien (Albert Remy) is having an affair with a co-worker, his merge poverty and that both parents discuss openly in front of Antoine about sending him to an orphanage. Antoine and his friend Rene (Patrick Auffay) turn to the streets of Paris for acceptance and comfort. What Antoine finds is even greater despair as time again he gets caught up in unsavory activity which puts him afoul of Julien and the law. After Antoine steals typewriters from Julien’s work place and is caught, attempting to put them back, both Julien and Gilberte turn there backs on Antoine and he is sent to a detention facility under the care of a psychiatrist. Antoine eventually is sent to a work camp where he escapes and the movie ends with Antoine splashing in the surf.
