In New York, a well-to-do family finds out that Arthur (E. G. Marshall) wishes to separate from his wife, Eve (Geraldine Page), who has just left a mental health facility and is still unstable. Their three grown daughters have their own problems. Renata (Diane Keaton), the oldest, is a poet whose husband, Frederick (Richard Jordan), is a writer who has not been successful and has become paranoid and envious. Another daughter, Joey (Mary Beth Hurt), is her father’s favorite, but doesn’t know what to pursue for a career. Her partner Michael (Sam Waterston) tries to be patient. The youngest girl, Flyn (Kristin Griffith), had tried to become an actor in California. Arthur divorces Eve and marries Pearl (Maureen Stapleton). The daughters react very differently to Eve’s behavior as a victim.
