George M. Cohan (James Cagney) got his start in Vaudeville at a very young age as part of a family act, the Four Cohans. Vaudeville was a tough life, but it gave George the drive to become a great actor. Traveling constantly with one-night stands at seedy clubs, George learned how to please an audience. He became a jack-of-all-trades in the entertainment business. He could sing, dance, and write songs, musical revues, and stage plays. World War I arrived, and George wanted to enlist. He was rejected because they said he was too old. George’s star rose high in the heavens as he wrote popular songs, such as “Over There”, the theme song of WWI, and produced numerous Broadway productions. Of course, what goes up usually comes down, and George found himself obsolete and in retirement. That is until he’s pulled out of retirement by President Roosevelt as America sits on the brink of WWII. He also receives the Medal of Honor for his contribution to America.
