When a working girl has her illegitimate baby at the estate of Squire Allworthy in the 1700s, the foundling is called “Tom Jones,” and raised by the wealthy patron. Tom (Albert Finney) grows up to be a rascal who fights, drinks, fornicates, and amuses the old Squire. Less amused is the rightful heir Bilfil (David Warner) to the Squire who arranges a scandal to have Tom banished before he is made a competitor for the estate. Sent away by the Squire after a wild town hunt, replete with foxes, Tom reluctantly leaves his love Sophie (Susannah York) and makes his way to London where he meets a variety of women whom he charms. Sophie also runs off to London after refusing an arranged marriage with Blifil. Tom must learn of his surprising parentage and his rightful place in society with Sophie’s help.
