Michael Dorsey (Dustin Hoffman) is an out of work actor who cannot find a job because he has a reputation of being impossible to work with. When he hears from his friend Sandy (Teri Garr) that a popular soap opera is looking for a female actress, he dresses up as a woman and auditions for the part which he ends up getting. Unfortunately for Michael, he develops an attraction to one of his female costars on the show Julie Nichols (Jessica Lange). At the same time, Julie's father Les (Charles Durning) falls in love with Michael's female persona which leaves Michael with the dilemma of how to get out of the situation.
