Marcellus (Richard Burton) buys a slave Demetrius (Victor Mature) before his is assigned to a far corner of the Roman Empire in the time of Jesus: Judea. There, Marcellus is assigned to the crucifixion of Jesus. Drunk while Jesus hangs on the cross, he plays dice to win his seamless robe. But the robe gives him spiritual problems when he contemplates who Jesus claims to be. His slave Demetrius finds hope among those who follow Jesus and returns to his master to tell him how he can be set free from his guilt. Marcellus' wife, Diana (Jean Simmons) also converts to belief in Jesus. These social changes bring a challenge to Marcellus, but he must contend with his own conscience.
