Griffin Mill (Tim Robbins), a successful Hollywood producer, spends his days listening to movie pitches and either giving them the green light for development or turning them down. Mill starts hearing rumors that Larry Levi (Peter Gallagher), an up-and-comer in the studio, might be gunning for his job. He also begins to think that he might have turned down the wrong person when he starts getting threatening postcards. He believes David Kahane (Vincent D’Onofrio), a writer he recently rejected, is the one sending the postcards. Mill confronts Kahane, hoping to placate his threats by promising a scriptwriting deal, but Kahane swears his innocence. A drunken and contentious Kahane starts fighting with Mill, who kills him in a rage. Police detectives (Whoopi Goldberg and Lyle Lovett) investigate him for the murder, his job is still in jeopardy, and Mill realizes that the person sending the postcards is still out there.
