During World War I in the United States, prostitution flourished in New Orleans and its infamous red-light district called Storyville. “Pretty Baby” tells of the coming-of-age of a 12-year old girl named Violet (Brooke Shields) who lives with her mother (Susan Sarandon) in the brothel and learns about life from cynical and pathetical prostitutes, the hard businesswoman Madame (Frances Faye) and house’s the piano player (Antonio Fargas). Her one redeeming friend is a photographer named Bellocq (Keith Carradine) who is more interested in documenting the seedy lives of the women. With much attention to the details of early photography more than sexual activity, the story unfolds with the de-flowering of the girl on her birthday, sold to the highest bidder among a society of well-to-do middle-aged men. Taking pity on her, Bellocq eventually marries the child, but lets her go with her mother who wants to escape the life of prostitution.
