The Minivers are a family living comfortably in England just before World War II. Mrs. Miniver (Greer Garson) and her husband Clem (Walter Pidgeon) have several children, one of whom, their son, Vin (Richard Ney), attends a university. Vin comes home for a visit and meets Carol Beldon (Teresa Wright), who comes from an upper-class family. They marry in spite of some disagreements. Vin then joins the Royal Air Force to help with the war effort, while Clem helps people evacuate and his wife attends to a German soldier who is wounded. While Vin is gone, Carol encounters a stray bullet and the town is blitzed with bombs. The people resolve to fight to preserve their life.
