New York Times correspondent Sydney Schanberg (Sam Waterston) has covered the civil war in Cambodia for several years. The key to his success is the invaluable help of a local interpreter and journalist, Dith Pran (Haing S. Ngor). When the foreigners are evacuated after the Khmer Rouge comes to power, Schanberg is forced out of the country, but Pran must remain behind to face the terrors of the Pol Pot regime. Schanberg returns home to receive journalism rewards while his friend must struggle daily just to survive. Dith Pran ultimately escapes the killing fields and is able to find his way to Thailand, where the two friends are reunited.
