In 1948, in the town of Nuremberg, Germany, an American judge, Dan Haywood (Spencer Tracy), is going to head a tribunal concerned with German judges who are accused of aiding the crimes of The Holocaust. At the heart of this film is Haywood's relationship with a German woman, Madame Bertholt (Marlene Dietrich), who is the widow of a German officer. It is this relationship that brings light to the basic question being asked, which is, are human beings accountable for their actions during a time of war, when authorities demand immoral acts? Madame Bertholt represents the German people, speaking as one of them, the wife of an officer who followed orders. Judge Haywood listens to her patiently, trying to fathom the thinking behind the minds responsible for looking the other way during a time of unspeakable horror and violence. She gives him insight to the plight of an average citizen, trying to perform ordinary tasks during the stress and pressure of uncertain times. She in turn realizes that people in authority on either side of the war, are limited by their own judgement and their own experiences.
