Archy Hamilton's (Mark Lee) carefree life on a ranch in Australia is interrupted when he decides to join his country's fight in Turkey during World War I. Most disappointed is Archy's Uncle Jack (Bill Kerr) who had been training him as a child to represent his country as a sprinter in the Olympics. His family knows the dangers of war and try to convince him he could show his patriotism better by being a great athlete. Archy is young and naive about many things. Many of his friends are signing up to fight, therefore, and this pressure to stick with his mates is too strong. Archy soon finds he is headed to war where he meets other young men who share his idealism. One such carefree and naive young man is Frank Dunne (Mel Gibson) who loves to run like Archy, but is not nearly as talented. Yet, with youthful enthusiasm, Frank convinces Archy there is nothing to be afraid of: they can outrun the Turks in the war and return some day to Australia and run in the Olympics together.
