When escaped convict Albert Ganz (James Remar) and his partner Billy Bear (Sonny Landham) kill the partner of San Francisco police detective Jack Cates (Nick Nolte) with his own gun, the enraged cop resorts to finding the last surviving members of Ganz' gang to track him down. This results in his meeting with Reggie Hammond (Eddie Murphy), who promises to help Cates find Ganz, but only if he can be released from jail to do it. Cates agrees to have him released for 48 hours, during which time he has to track down Ganz and find out just why Hammond is so determined to help him do it.
