Cal Trask (James Dean) and his brother, Aron (Richard Davalos) are the sons of a vegetable farmer, Adam (Raymond Massey). The boys have been told that their mother died when they were young. Cal, embittered by the belief that his father only loves Aron, learns that his mother, in reality, owns a successful brothel When Adam’s vegetable plans end in failure, Cal goes to his mother, Kate (Jo Van Fleet) for capital to start a bean farming venture. When WWI comes, the beans become a major success. Cal thinks that finally he’s done something to make his father proud. He gives Adam some money which his father rudely rejects. Aron’s girlfriend, Abra (Julie Harris) tries to calm the upset Cal. Aron sees them together and orders Cal to stay away from her. Bitter and angry, Cal takes his brother to visit their mother. The shock is too much for Aron who gets drunk and joins the army. Adam tries to dissuade him, to no avail, and ends up having a stroke. Cal talks to his invalid father, but communication fails. Abra convinces him to try again. Adam sends the nurse away so that Cal can be his sole caregiver.
