A handsome and dynamic new teacher, James Leeds (William Hurt), starts working at the School for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing in New England. There he got acquainted with Sarah Norman (Marlee Matlin), a former pupil of the school who is remained as custodian, preferring the secluded world inside the elite school to the confrontation with the outside world. The unconventional teaching methods of James show their fruits, but his main interest becomes the beautiful Sarah, whose cold and cynical manners conceal a sensitive but troubled person. Sarah expresses herself only with sign-language, even if she could learn to speak. They fall in love, but their relationship is marred by their disagreement on whether Sarah must try to speak or not. After a long avoided confrontation with her mother, Sarah will decide what is really important in her life.
