A broken King Arthur (Richard Harris) is going to war against his friend, Sir Lancelot (Franco Nero). He talks with his old mentor, Merlin (Laurence Naismith ) who has him think back to when he first met Guinevere (Vanessa Redgrave). Both had been nervous about the arranged marriage, but they had met inadvertently in the forest, liked each other, and soon married. Arthur had made plans for a “round table” with all of his greatest knights hoping to bring unity to England. Sir Lancelot hears of this and comes to join the group. In a contest where Lancelot defeats three great knights, Guinevere becomes attracted to him. This is the start of a love triangle between Arthur, Guinevere, and Lancelot. Although Arthur has suspicions, he defends them by banishing anyone who hints at their affair. Unfortunately, Arthur’s illegitimate son, Mordred (David Hemmings) arrives, determined to cause trouble. He bands with the banished knights and challenges Arthur to spend a night away from the castle to prove that Guinevere is being faithful to him. Guinevere and Lancelot are caught, Lancelot escapes, and Guinevere is sentenced to be burned. Arthur loves her and is in despair but can do nothing.
