Jane Craig (Holly Hunter) is a journalist at a major network's news division during a period when the company is downsizing the department in order to improve their bottom line. When Tom Grunick (William Hurt) is brought in from a local sports desk to train for anchor work, Jane and her friend Aaron Altman (Albert Brooks) first have questions about his capability. But things get more complicated when Jane realizes she's developing feelings for Tom, while Aaron has been unable to express his long-term feelings for her.
