It is the sixties and the media is not very friendly towards modern music and the BBC plays only 2 hours of rock and roll music every week. But not everything is gray because Quentin (Bill Nighy) and his rock and roll deejays are running a Pirate radio from the North Sea and over 25 million people are listening to his station in lack of other broadcasters. The main storyline revolves around a kid called Carl (Tom Sturridge) who gets together with his godfather Quentin after he is expelled from school.
