Mark Thackery (Sidney Poitier) is an out-of-work black engineer. To make ends meet and to bide time until he can find another engineering position, he becomes a teacher in the rough North Quay school in the East End of London. The students there are the roughest of the rough, coming from broken homes and broken lives. Thackery is given charge of the worst class in the school. Students such as Pamela Dare (Judy Geeson), Barbara Pegg (Lulu), and Potter (Chris Chittell) are the disaffected, racist hooligans of the class, who are firmly anti-authority and have minimal respect for Mark as a symbol of authority and because he is black. Mark has the task of preparing these people for life in the real world, and must also gaining their respect before discharging the students into the rough, real world outside of the school gates.
