A true art-house film, this is a feature-length documentary that presents visually arresting imagery and a clear, pro-environmental message. There is neither a story, plot, dialogue, or characters, but rather it is composed of nature imagery that is presented in stark contrast with images of environmental impact that humanity has wreaked upon the planet. Koyaanisqatsi takes its name from the Hopi language meaning, "life out of balance". It starts with imagery of ancient rock wall paintings and then sequences of waves, clouds, and magnificent features of nature. Contrasting with man's impact it then segues into landscapes of buildings, automobiles, and construction equipment. The message is that the planet is becoming out of balance with man destroying the planet, and human progress being ultimately foolish when compared to nature's forces.
