In Los Robles, a town on the U. S./Mexico border, newlyweds Mike and Susan Vargas (Charlton Heston and Janet Leigh) are crossing back over to Mexico where he is a Mexican drug enforcement official. At the border crossing, a bomb inside a car explodes, and Mike decides to get involved in the investigation. But he has to work with Sheriff Hank Quinlan (Orson Welles) who has a reputation for being corrupt. Susan is practically abandoned in an available motel. As Mike discovers that Hank has planted evidence and framed innocent people in the case, Susan feels threatened and vulnerable. First she is stalked by the creepy motel clerk (Dennis Weaver), then threatened by gang members led by a crime boss that Hank has hired to get Mike off of his trail of corruption. Mike must decide if he should abandon the investigation to protect his bride or go head-to-head with Hank.
