Carol (Catherine Deneuve) is a young woman living in London with her sister Helen (Yvonne Furneaux). She works as a manicurist in a shop, and is shy and reserved, and distrusting of men, especially her sister's married boyfriend Michael (Ian Hendry). While her sister goes away on holiday with her boyfriend, Carol quickly descends into a strange sort of madness. Having met a young suitor, Colin (John Fraser), who she agrees to a date with, she eventually ends up killing him. Her delusions and psychosis increase as she kills another man who attempts to rape her. When her sister returns from her holiday, she finds her sister a completely different, unresponsive person. All of this seems to revolve around an early life of repressed memories of sexual abuse.
