Det in very elegant surroundings, with beautiful people in beautiful clothing. The characters are unnamed, but the main characters are a striking woman referred to as “A” (Delphine Seyrig), her possible lover “X” (Giorgio Albertazzi), and a man who might or not be the woman’s husband, “M” (Sacha Pitoëff). The movie is very ambiguous involving the relationships of the main characters. It also seems to slip between dreams, daydreams, memories, and reality. X accosts A and recounts a pledge that she had supposedly made a year earlier to run off with him. A indicates that she is unacquainted with X, and that she has never made such a commitment. Throughout the course of the film, X contains to encounter A and try to convince her of the truth of his statements.
