Kundun (1997) is the Tibetan way of referring to the Dalai Lama. Kundun means "the Presence." The movie is a biography of the 14th Dalai Lama, from his identification as the Dalai Lama in 1937 Tibet, through his schooling as a monk in Lhasa, and his acts as head of state for Tibet. When he is 14, the Chinese invade Tibet, and he attempts to negotiate for his people, but is finally unsuccessful. In 1959, he is forced to flee to India, where he has lived ever since. "Kundun" provides a window on Tibetan culture and religion, on the events that led to the China-Tibet conflict, and on the role the Dalai Lama has played in the lives of his people and the people of the world.
