Medieval English King Henry II (Peter O’Toole) struggles to unite his kingdom and gain complete power due to a mighty struggle with the church. The King decides to wait out the last days of the Archbishop of Canterbury and to bypass the Catholic Church to appoint his old friend Thomas Becket (Richard Burton) as the new Archbishop. The King is permitted to do this as Becket is indeed a deacon of some sort, but the King’s intention is to use Becket’s position as a means to gain total control over England. The King is dismayed to learn that Becket takes his position seriously and will combat the King over religious matters. King Henry II must now make it a point of riding himself of Becket.
