Though “Bad Day at Black Rock” sounds like a Western, and is set in the desert badlands, this tale speaks of prejudice and mysterious evil in the days after World War II. An elderly man with one arm named Macreedy (Spencer Tracy) steps off the train in the American West, looking for a Japanese farmer who lived in the area. Given an unkind and unwelcome reception by town bullies (Ernest Borgnine and Lee Marvin), he finds the gentry (Robert Ryan) and sheriff (Dean Jagger) equally unfriendly. By talking to some reluctant residents, Macreedy pieces together some vigilante hatred that caused townsfolk to have overstepped their bounds. Though Macreedy wants to give the farmer the medal his son earned, he must face sheer racial hatred for Japanese and those who are friends of Japanese. In a shocking climax for the era, the old man proves to be a martial arts expert whose display of physical power with one arm shocks all.
