Sandy Bates (Woody Allen) is a successful filmmaker of goofy comedies who is attending a film festival retrospective of his past work. But he finds himself questioning his past achievements and wanting to do more with his life as he goes through a series of encounters with well wishers, fans, sycophants, and assorted hangers-on during the course of the event. During the course of his epiphany, he meets a woman named Dorrie (Charlotte Rampling) and falls in love with her, but is still haunted by his past.
