A talented American boxer, Sean Thornton (John Wayne), leaves America in a whirl of scandal and returns to Ireland for peace and isolation. What he finds, however, is love. He meets the outspoken Mary Kate Danaher (Maureen O'Hara), sister of the ornery "Red" Will Danaher (Victor McLagen) who takes a dislike to Sean almost immediately. He spends much of his time and effort trying to keep his sister and Sean apart, while Sean spends his wooing the lovely Mary Kate. All the while, Sean continues running from and hiding his past from his new wife and friends, but his efforts ultimately prove futile.
