The story centers around Gil Buckman (Steve Martin) and his wife Karen (Mary Steenburgen) who are raising their young family as best they can. Gil suffers from the guilt most parents feel about the success or not of their parenting as he tries to juggle that with his career which isn't going to well. We also meet his sister Helen (Dianne Wiest), a single parent struggling with two rebellious teenage kids (Joaquim Phoenix and Martha Plimpton) and a deadbeat brother and confused sister and her husband (Rick Moranis) who are trying to raise a superkid. Eventually Gil learns to stop trying to control everything that happens to him and his family and enjoy the roller coaster ride that is life.
