Oliver! is based on the Charles Dickens novel Oliver Twist. Oliver (Mark Lester) is an orphan in Victorian England who is thrown out of a workhouse for asking for more food and sold to an undertaker. After disastrous events, Oliver runs away to London where he is enlisted into a pack of young pickpockets by the crafty Artful Dodger (Jack Wild). Directing the gang is Fagin (Ron Moody), one of Charles Dickens' most controversial characters. Fagin also works as a fence for the angry and murderous Bill Sykes (Oliver Reed) whose wife Nancy (Shani Wallis), almost a den mother to the children in the gang, is determined to find Oliver a better life.
