Conrad Jarrett (Timothy Hutton) returns from his stay at a psychiatric hospital to his suburban home where he had tried to commit suicide. His suicide attempt was because of his misplaced guilt over his older brother's accidental death. He idolized his older brother and believes that he should have died instead of his brother. To complicate his home life, his mother, Beth Jarrett (Mary Tyler Moore) acts like she believes this also. She was used to having the perfect life and the perfect family and can't accept this new phase of their lives. Normally removed from daily family life, Calvin Jarrett (Donald Sutherland) a successful Chicago attorney tries to hold his family together. He sees that his only remaining son gets the help he needs by taking him to see a psychiatrist, Dr. Tyrone C. Berger (Judd Hirsch). He also wants his wife to join him for family therapy, but she refuses to participate because she is emotionally blocked. The family eventually moves on but with some losses as some can change and others cannot.
