When Richard the Lion Hearted is held for ransom in Austria, his brother wants to leave him there in order to hold the throne for himself. “Ivanhoe,” a Saxon knight (Robert Taylor), loyal to the real king, tries to raise money for the ransom. He goes to Isaac, a rich Jewish merchant whose daughter Rebecca (Elizabeth Taylor) falls in love with the noble knight. But Ivanhoe has eyes only for Lady Rowena (Joan Fontaine). Isaac will pay the ransom to gain religious tolerance for Jews, but Prince John arrests Rebecca for witchcraft and wants the money for himself. Sir Brian de Bois Guilbert (George Sanders) who is loyal to the Prince has fallen in love with Rebecca and faces the most complex problems as villain of the story. Dressed as the Black Knight, Ivanhoe enters a jousting tournament to win the freedom of Rebecca and, obliquely, the money for the ransom. With the help of Robin of Locksley (Robin Hood), Ivanhoe battles Guilbert at the climax, with winner to take all.
