Tom Joad (Henry Fonda) is paroled from prison and begins to travel home. Along the way he meets a preacher, Jim Casy (John Carradine) and they travel together. When they reach Tom's home they find it deserted and go on to his uncle's home. Once there they find his family packing for a journey for California since their home has been repossessed and prospects in Oklahoma are dim due to the Dust Bowl. Pa (Russell Simpson) and Ma (Jane Darwell) Joad have been seduced boy stories of California and have decided to seek their fortunes their. The film chronicles their journey to California and the outcome of their lives once they arrive.
